Beyond the borders of sovereignty created by man artificially (customs, barbed wire, walls or marks) or taking advantage of geographical features such as rivers or mountains, throughout history there have been, and still are, many other borders of an economic, social, political, legal, religious, linguistic, ideological, artistic, or cultural nature, sometimes clear and forceful, at other times imperceptible or very subtle. With a broad perspective, and seeking to reflect this historical reality, the IX General Congress on the History of Navarre was held in Pamplona on 12, 13 and 14 September 2018, organised by the Society for the Historical Studies of Navarre, in accordance with its founding aims. Under the slogan “Navarre: old and new frontier spaces”, in this new edition the organising committee decided to approach the concept of frontier, going beyond its meaning as “border of a state”, to trace relationships, analogies and differences between the old and the new, between the outside and the inside, between the admitted and the strange, between the visible and the invisible, between the tangible and the intangible, between the real and the imaginary, between the permanent and the passing, between the everyday and the extraordinary … … trying to mark movements of novelty, of continuity, of influence, of reception, of passage, of transience, of contrast, of exchange, of rejection, of projection, etc. , that can be observed throughout the history of Navarre…
